Q. What are Hair Extensions?

A. They are appendages of 100% human or monofilament hairs that are attached from the base of your hair next to the scalp to create instant thickness, texture and length. Once applied, they can be styled, washed and in most cases treated like the rest of your own hair.

Q. Why and when do Hair Extensions or Wigs become necessary?
A. For so many reasons. Here are a few:

    • If your hair is too fine and you struggle and fuss each day trying to force it to do what it simply can't do.
    • If your hair simply does not grow and you get frustrated watching it at a stand still.
    • If you are going on a vacation and have not time to deal with your own hair.
    • If you just want to add volume, streaks, thickness or just plain have fun.
    • If you have undergone chemotherapy and are awaiting the growth of your new hair.
    • If you suffer from Alopecial, Lupis or Tricotilamania and need patches of hair to replace what has been lost.
Q. How do I take care of my new hairbraids.?

Taking care of your hair extensions will not give you a lot of extra work. Here are just a few tips that will help to keep your extensions and your hair in a better condition.

First of all follow the instructions given to you by your stylist.

Washing: Keep your hair clean. Hair tangles when dirt and sweat build up, wash your hair after exercise, swimming etc. Brush your hair and remove all tangles before washing it. Wash your hair going in a downward motion. Use a good quality shampoo, your stylist can advise you what product is best for your hair. When lots of water is added at once to very dry hair, hair can swell up and tangle. Gradually wet the hair and brush gently before you completely wash it. This is more common with less expensive extension hair.

Styling: When brushing use a soft bristle brush, start at the ends of your hair and gently work your way up. Always brush in a downward motion. Do not brush harshly. Brush your hair 2 or 3 times a day. Heat is your one of your hair's biggest enemy, the more you use it, the shorter your hair extensions will last. Be careful with the use of blowdryers and curling irons. It is best to let your hair dry naturally.

Exercise: Wear a cap when swimming or keep your hair out of the water. Chlorine and salt water can cause the hair to tangle and mat up. It is recommended to wear your hair up or in a ponytail when you swim or exercise

Sleeping: Never sleep on wet hair, make sure your hair is completely dry before you go to bed. It is also recommended to wrap your hair together or gently tie it up to prevent tangling.

Hair care products: Use a good (leave-in) conditioner to keep your hair soft. Don't over do it. Too much conditioner or any other hair care product can cause a build up and tangling. Avoid hair products that contain alcohol. Alcohol makes hair dry. Ask your stylist what would be the best products for your hair

Hair treatments: Don't perm, color or any other chemical process to your own hair extensions. Let your stylist take care of that.

In general it is better not to brush synthetic hair and keep this hair away from all sources of excessive heat.
ProHair synthetic hair extensions can be brushed in exactly the same way as one would brush the natural hair but it is essential that the correct type of soft bristle brush is used and ProHair Daily Conditioning Spray.

Your stylist knows your hair type, ask us what is best for you
and how to take care of your hair extensions.

Q. How much do hair extensions cost?

This is by far the most common question asked by customers and yet the most difficult to be answered by hair extensioners. It is almost the same as calling a car dealer and asking how much is a car? The price of hair extensions depends on a number of things.

    • The length, thickness and type of hairstyle that one has plays a big roll in pricing.
    • The quality of hair to be used.
    • Regular Chinese or Indonesian machine wefted hair applied in the weaving method can average $200.00-$500.00.
    • Indian machine wefted hair applied in the weaving method can average $300.00-$600.00.
    • European and Italian hand wefted human hair is the most expensive and the price can average anywhere from $500.00-$1,000.00.
Q. Will hair extensions damage my own hair?

A. No! In most cases it will help your own hair to grow even better. This depends of course if the hair extensions are properly applied by a well-experienced hair extension practitioner, and if you follow the proper procedures for care and maintenance as outlined for you.

Q. What are the different techniques used in extensions?

The techniques vary extensively and some techniques can even be combined

Hair Braiding and Cornrows - involves adding human or synthetic hair corn rowed or individually braided into the hair. The result is very maintenance free fashionable and lasts anywhere from one to four months. It is extremely safe on your hair and actually encourages hair growth at twice the normal rate. It is a great way to grow your hair without fuss and stress.

Hair Weaving Method - in this method the hair is corn rowed into a track and the commercial human or synthetic hair is sewn into the track as is shown below. It is safe on your hair. It is best for people with thin fine hair where other methods like the glue method; great length method etc. might be too harsh for their hair. It is also best for people with very this short hair who want length. The weave method allows for the clients hair to braided and hidden so that the new hair can be sown. Techniques like great length, fusion or megas are not suitable as the clients thick hair will stick our in the new hair.

Individual Braid and Tie Off or 4-Strand Cross Over Braid and Fused - in this method, small sections of human or synthetic hair is added into small sections of the clients hair using a 3 strand or 4 strand braiding method. The result is free flowing head of hair easy to pull up in a ponytail or other up do. See below. This by far is the best and safest method for all hair types. It is very time consuming though and therefore very expensive.

Bonding Method - The clients hair is sectioned as in the weaving method but instead of braiding the hair, hair-bonding solution is applied at the scalp and the commercial hair is applied on top. It is very secure and can stay in place for up to one month before loosening. It is recommended for people who have hair too short for other methods or if clients prefer a very flat feel on their scalp. Again it is not recommended for clients with very thin hair. The ultratress is the newest technique that uses a very high quality human hair specially made with a very thin base and uses the bonding approach in its application. The hair although expensive like some other methods, unlike other methods the hair can be reused several times over.

The Utratress. Similar to bonding but utilizing special hair with poryutrane base, which is applied, with special hair adhesive. The result is quick, virtually undetectable, reusable hair as in the weaving method and can easily be used on both thin and thick hairs

DREADLOCKS [Hairstyle once for the less fortunate now is for the Stars and the more fortunate. Dreadlocks can be done with once own hair or with extensions to create length or to create temporary dreads. It involves sectioning the hair twisting, backcombing and shaping it into nice round shapes. The result is easy carefree hairdo with virtually no maintenance.

Euroloc Hair Extension System - This system uses tubular capsules that are lightweight to attach small appendages of human or synthetic hair to your own hair. The look is also free flowing but this technique is rather time consuming and not very popular for this reason.

Mega Hair Extension - This system again uses hot wax specially formulated for use with human and synthetic hair to attach individual sections of hair to ones own hair. It is relatively safe on your own hair, but requires regular maintenance every 6 weeks. Failure to maintain regularly as required could cause breakage of your own hair.

Hair Integration - Human hair is weaved into a crocheted web. The finished product is like a lightweight wig without a real base. When applied, you can pull your own hair through to create texture, volume or length.

Great Lengths Extensions/Cinderella - This is similar to mega extensions above, the difference is that great length hair is purchased in individual strands with the glue already secured. The extentionist uses a machine to attach each strand to the client's hair. Like the megas it is natural looking and feeling. It is great for updos and clients in the entertainment field who like to dance and move their hair around. The disadvantage is that is very time consuming and therefore is more expensive.

Wigs, Hair Pieces and Three Quarter Wigs - Today's wigs and hairpieces are made nicer; they feel and look more real than those from before. They can even be sewn into your own hair and they can be slept in and styled like your own hair for up to six weeks or more.

Ponytails, Hair Add Ons, Secret Hair and Hair Scrunchies - These are very easy hair accessories that enhances your hair and look in a snap, starting as low as $10.00

At Mary-Claris we offer all the above hair extension techniques, wigs and hairpieces. We carry the largest selection of wigs, hairpieces and all accessories for braiding and doing hair extensions. We supply and ship hair to customers and salons anywhere in Canada.
